Tips for an African Honeymoon
For couples who would like to do more than sit by the beach on their honeymoon – like me, for example – it might be worth considering a luxury African honeymoon. There are so many different places to go and an incredible variety of fun, exciting things to do. This is especially so if you love nature; you’ll rarely get as close to such a fascinating variety of both exotic animals and plant life. Africa has a hugely varied climate, so where you choose to stay can depend on your preference for rainforests or open desert.
My top choice for an African honeymoon would be Mozambique. This long African country is actually far from your stereotypical images of Africa. Since its beaches lead into the Indian Ocean, the coast and islands share features with the likes of Mauritius, Seychelles, and the Maldives. If you want to spend part of your honeymoon lounging on the beach and the other part exploring a new country, Mozambique is the perfect destination. It has a very intriguing culture with remnants from a variety of traders and colonists as well as an innate African heritage. Visiting the island of Ibo on the Quirimbas Archipelago on a guided tour will give you an intricate insight into the history of this beautiful African country.
South Africa lies just below Mozambique and can afford you the opportunities to explore African wildlife at a much closer range. Africa’s seasons are the opposite of ours, so heading out into the heat knowing that it’s still a chilly winter day in the UK is thrilling. Spring is an especially beautiful time in South Africa with carpets of gorgeous flowers emerging over the many fields.
The country is also home for much of Africa’s stunning and endangered wildlife. A safari is the perfect way to experience it. You can either choose to have your entire honeymoon on a safari, sleeping in luxury tents along the way, or just go on a single day’s excursion. Some luxury tour companies will offer fantastic unique safaris; how about wandering through the desert on an elephant’s back? The other animals won’t even know you exist, allowing your tour group virtually unimaginable closeness to nature. You’ll think you’re in a real life nature documentary, except with your new husband or wife by your side. South Africa also boasts a train safari which will ensure your comfort in luxury rail cars in between stop-offs.
If you’re a wine connoisseur, you’ll know that many delicious varieties of wine come out of South Africa, at times rivalling the best France has to offer. If you chose to have an African honeymoon, you could easily explore the vineyards and sample varieties of wine that may not be available at home. Enjoy local wine with every dinner in some regions.
South Africa has its own coast with a huge variety of ocean wildlife. Whale watchers love to linger in Walker Bay and catch sight of the Southern Right Whales as they head inland to calve from July to November. You can choose to stay on the coast or mix up your honeymoon between South Africa and another destination.
In short, for the honeymooning couple, Africa truly can offer it all with beaches, adventure, and luxury to remember for a lifetime. Many couples will only honeymoon once, so make yours special by choosing an African honeymoon.
